CIEE Council on International Educational Exchange2021.07-2021.08(2 months)During the four-week summer program in 2021, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to various destinations, including Dublin, Cork, Derry, and Belfast. The purpose of these travels was to delve into the legacies of remarkable figures who have driven social change, such as Frederick Douglass and Daniel O’Connell, and other influential leaders.A central theme of the program was to pay homage to Frederick Douglass transformative experience during his visit to Ireland over 175 years ago. In a powerful display of solidarity, the Irish people embraced Douglass, and he had the privilege of meeting the renowned Irish reformer, Daniel O’Connell. This meeting had a profound impact on Douglass, broadening his perspective on social injustice and inspiring his advocacy for positive social change through non-violent social and political means. It was a truly extraordinary initiative, and it was particularly special as the Government of Ireland generously sponsored the 2021 Fellows in honor of this historic meeting. It served as a testament to Irelands unwavering dedication to social justice and peace-building. I was immensely grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in the rich history of these locations and draw inspiration from the legacies of these giants of social change.Charles B.
