Besides being available to listen to my peers for at least 4 hours a month, I also contributed actively to weekly meetings, asking questions and lending my insight to questions raised by others in their practice. In the course of my 3 years with P. S. We Care, I attended training in peer listening skills every semester, together with ad-hoc therapy trainings and supervision in topics such as Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and a Sexual Assault First Responder workshop.Admissions Fellow
Yale-NUS College2019.11-2020.04(6 months)I contributed to the holistic admissions process by the Yale-NUS Admissions Team by interviewing shortlisted applicants to Yale-NUS with warmth, professionalism and impartiality, then writing and submitting reports on their fit with the college. I interviewed 55 students from various nationalities over the course of 4 months, and learnt important skills in communicating, listening and responding to questions with confidence and enthusiasm online.Residential College Advisor
Yale-NUS College2019.07-2020.04(10 months)Residential College Advisors are Yale-NUS students selected and trained to mentor 13-16 Yale-NUS students in their first year of college. RCAs receive training in skills such as crisis management, setting boundaries, identity-based support, mediation and conflict management, supporting survivors of sexual misconduct, self-care, motivational interviewing, listening, and orientation program briefings (based on lesson plans developed by the Dean of Students Office on consent, intercultural engagement, and writing). In my role, I flexibly supported the personal, professional, interpersonal and academic growth of 13 first-year students at Yale-NUS College through programming, peer-to-peer advising, and community building activities. On a peer-to-peer level, I set up one-on-one consultations for all students at least 4 times in the 9 months, where I checked in on their whole being and wellness in a deliberate manner and listened to their reflections, emotions and life happenings. I also made myself visible and available through text and in person, as an active participant of school events. On a group level, I built community by initiating weekly or fortnightly meals, celebrating all birthdays, and organising hangout and reflection events. I also led discussions on privilege, consent, wellness and identity and facilitated related activities (planned by various departments of our Dean of Students Office). These are important to build a culture of care, justice and safety on campus. As disagreements and difficult situations arose between multiple parties, I also mediated these in a calm, confident and objective manner. At a Residential College level, RCAs took turns to man a duty phone to handle emergencies outside office hours, and also carried out a few Residential College-level events. We also exchanged ideas during fortnightly meetings. For my service and commitment, I was nominated by my students and achieved the Residential Life Service Award in 2020.Researcher, Pulau Ubin
Yale-NUS College2019.05-2019.08(4 months)Upon successfully applying for funding under Yale-NUS' Student Research Program (Self-Initiated), I conducted research on how light availability influences seedling recruitment in Pulau Ubin's mangroves, while laying the foundation for a long-term research project tracking mangrove regeneration. I co-led the project with Dr Taylor Sloey (researcher and lab manager) and Heng Jie Min (a fellow Yale-NUS student and my sister), managing the operations of the project, finding innovative and efficient ways to collect our data, learning mangrove seedling identification, and recruiting volunteers including my father who grew up among mangroves. We also presented some preliminary findings at the Summer Research Symposium poster presentation event.Chairperson, I'dECO (Yale-NUS Sustainability Movement)
Yale-NUS College2016.10-2018.09(2 years)When I was handed the position of chairperson in 2017, I was the only person of my year remaining in the club, with a few other committed and passionate, but overworked, individuals. I initiated a meeting where as a club we revamped our organisational vision, mission and structure based on member interests, an assessment of our impact and our strengths as an academic institution-backed student organisation. I also initiated an Environmental Science group and revived an environmental peer networking/mentoring program that existing when I first joined the school. From having a clear picture of our priorities and communicating this to more students, we recruited and retained more than 30 active members, forming the biggest club on campus.Prior to 2017, I was Vice-Chairperson of the club in 2016 and mainly took on the role of preparing and consolidating weekly meeting agendas and minutes, as well as evaluation and budget forms. I was also involved in many of our projects and helped communicate our project progress to the EXCO. In total, I was involved in organising more than 20 events which engaged >350 students and >250 members of the public. For the continued dynamism of the club, we attained the Certificate for Recognition for Campus Vibrancy in 2017 for 12th Student Achievement Awards. Our Environmental Education programs, SEAL and Chili Padi Academy, were also awarded a joint award for community service.Intern
National Parks Board2018.07-2018.08(2 months)At the National Biodiversity Centre (Terrestrial Branch), I designed a planting palette for a wetland area in Singapore and prepared a presentation for the Director to visualise the palette and highlight its attractive features. I also supported my supervisor's initiative by transferring some field botany notes into a layman's guide to classifying forests and identifying common species in different forest types in Singapore. During the internship, I also had the opportunity to visit and learn more about various forest types and plant species with the guidance of my supervisor, and had many conversations about the conservation stakeholders in Singapore.Research Assistant
Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute2018.06-2018.06Together with two post-docs, my professor and a fellow Yale-NUS student, we collected data regarding leaf and stem traits in Agua Salud, of over 40 species. We also managed aspects of living and working away from the city, adapting the lab equipment to an empty room and setting up a workflow for the data collection process. We also had lots of fun, having the chance to visit Barro Colorado Island, the STRI office in Panama City, discussing scientific and non-scientific topics over meals, as well as shopping, cooking and doing chores together. My friend Kristoforus and I also presented at the Yale-NUS Summer Research Symposium.Facilitator and Leader, Singapore Environmental Action and Leadership program
Yale-NUS College2016.08-2018.05(2 years)I directed and/or facilitated 4 runs of the Singapore Environmental Action and Leadership program, a 4-day program which exposes tertiary-level students to conceptual and practical means of analysing environmental issues and solutions within Singapore’s urban context. In total, we planned lectures, discussions, site visits, Human Library and student brainstorming and presentation sessions for more than 130 pre-university students. As a leader, I guided teams of about 10 facilitators in recruitment, publicity, logistics, website design, and curriculum planning. As a facilitator, I (co-)planned and (co-)delivered classes on conflict management and negotiation, wicked and super-wicked problems, schools of thought in environmentalism, natural capital, systems thinking, and other key topics.Presenter, 2017 Cebu Colloquium of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law
Yale-NUS College2017.05-2017.05Together with Eric Bea, then studying at NUS Law, I co-wrote and co-presented a paper titled “A River Runs Through It: Lessons from Singapore’s Water Story” on the legal and policy frameworks that enabled the success of Singapore water management, in a conference in Cebu, Philippines. I was very much a beginner in the field of sustainability then and am thankful for Eric's guidance and leadership throughout the writing and event process.Member, Strategies for Sustainability
Yale-NUS College2016.08-2017.05(10 months)Under the leadership of more experienced Yale-NUS seniors, we designed, pilot tested and ran surveys of stakeholders’ views on Yale-NUS College’s position on environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors in order to produce a materiality index. We did this by reading and summarising the sustainability reports done by other academic institutions and selecting factors appropriate for the Yale-NUS context. Together with a separate project on Yale-NUS Blueprint, we succeeded in setting up three paid Student Associate positions to form a Campus Sustainability Committee, with the intention of supporting a more complete board representing various sustainability-relevant departments on campus (this has not yet been formed).Chairperson, Bukit Panjang Community Club Youth Executive Committee
People's Association2012.12-2016.08(4 years)I joined the Bukit Panjang CC Youth Executive Committee once I met the age limit, wanting to understand the world of people outside of school and work with them to empower youths. I am grateful that I took away more than what I could have asked for, and we continue to stay connected through wedding invites, online gatherings and occasional conversations. From 2015 to 2016, I was the Membership Secretary and took charge of maintaining the volunteer database and creating processes to recruit, motivate and engage volunteers personally in their journey in the Youth Club. I also hosted volunteer sharing sessions. As Vice Chairperson from 2013-2015, I oversaw the planning of more than 10 large-scale events / regular programs, mentored younger members especially, and set the direction for the committee as a whole. During one of our gatherings I prepared an extensive feedback-giving process for members to be more engaged and connected to the committee's bigger picture. The results were also useful in guiding our tenure as chairpersons. I also represented the YEC in events such as the Grassroots Seminar. As a member from 2011 to 2013, I planned community-level events with fellow club members, with the key aim of engaging the youth of Bukit Panjang. These events included an overnight movie marathon, engagement project for youths-at-risk, mid- autumn festival games, Give-a-Gift 2013 (food donation drive). These few years were one of my maiden experiences working together with people from different age groups and backgrounds, and I cherish the friendships, mentorships and confidence that were placed in me.Legal Intern
K Prasad and Co.2016.04-2016.06(3 months)As a legal intern, I had the chance to work with Mr Prasad and a trainee to prepare and close cases covering family law, criminal law and civil disputes, supporting their work in legal research and document writing. Most of my time was spent on administrative and business tasks since I had very little legal background, but I was happy to learn from gradual exposure and attending court proceedings. These administrative tasks included (1) filing and archiving of legal documents, (2) scheduling and keeping track of appointments and deadlines, (3) filing of invoices and accounts, (4) managing client enquiries and correspondence, (5) liaising with SEO Companies, (6) editing website content and format, and (7) managing recruitment database and platforms. These tasks exposed me to various parts of running a small business too.Secretary-Treasurer, Raffles Jazz
Raffles Institution2014.03-2015.07(a year)As part of the executive committee, I curated a holistic learning experience for our batch, through envisioning our annual concert and regularly improving the quality of practices, music and gig experiences. As the secretary-treasurer, I prepared meeting agenda and minutes, managed funds, budget, CCA records, attendance and logistics, and also took the initiative to improve our process of scheduling band practices, for greater administrative efficiency. I also ensured that as an EXCO we were attuned to the personal goals of our individual members, and developed healthy and open relationships with them where feedback was welcomed.Intern
DSTA2014.08-2015.01(6 months)My project was titled Manned-Unmanned Teaming. I researched on different ways to realise the concept of manned-unmanned teaming on a naval platform (namely an Unmanned Surface Vehicle). I looked at different hull types, subsystems and mission modules, signal propagation methods, and stabilising systems so as to obtain a comprehensive picture and understanding of the compromises that came with different designs. I also designed a sample information flow and system architecture for the USV, together with dimensions for the platform.Treasurer-Secretary, Symphonic Band
Raffles Girls' School2010.03-2013.07(3 years)As Treasurer-Secretary (2012-2013), I was part of the executive committee and actively contributed to setting the direction for the band and planning key events. I was chosen to plan SYF Camp, an overnight camp, and I relished in the opportunity to create community and boost morale pre-competition. I also documented and revised minutes taken during meetings, handled administrative tasks like collecting cash, forms, and ticket orders, and conducted detailed documentation of cash flow. For my efforts I was awarded a Colours (Merit) award in Leadership. That same year, as sectional leader (2012-2013), I inspired and led the section towards greater musicianship, instilling in members a strong sense of responsibility and pride. I did this by being vulnerable in our section diary and in-person meetings, leading sectionals, and checking in with members individually. As Logistics Manager (2011-2012), I arranged for regular maintenance of instruments and managed team assets.Member, Audio-Visual Public Address Club
