For international companies marketing to Japan, the gap is usually between how they market globally and what actually works here — different platforms, different consumer psychology, different expectations of what an ad or a piece of content should do. For Japanese companies, the work looks quite different: building content strategies, designing social media operations that teams can sustain, setting up AI-assisted workflows that produce usable output at scale, and connecting marketing activity to business metrics in ways that hold up in the boardroom. In both cases, I work as an embedded advisor — part of the team, with a seat at the table. I set up Talkback Inc. in 2019 and went independent full-time in 2025. Before that: Disney, Twitter, Lenovo, and Indeed, across B2C and B2B marketing. What those roles had in common was the same problem in different forms: turning a marketing function into something that reliably moves numbers. That's still the job.
