Requirements To Teach English In China

The requirements for offering English language courses in China may vary slightly from province to province and city to city. However, before applying for an English teaching job, you must be aware of the minimum requirements in all parts of China.

Requirements To Teach English In China

You must have (or be able to obtain) a valid passport

You will need a passport so that you can travel from your country to China. If you don't already have a passport, then you can still apply for a teaching job in China. However, if you get a job right away, then the process will be delayed until you get your passport (which could take up to 1 month).

If you're really interested in teaching in China, start the process by getting a passport if you don't already have one. In addition to having a valid passport, you will need to apply for a legal work visa to teach English in China. You will need to apply for a Z visa to teach English in China.

Have at least a bachelor's degree

In order to teach English in China, you also need to have graduated from a reputed college or university. Therefore, if you don't have at least a bachelor's degree, you shouldn't waste your time applying for a job teaching English in China. In order to get a legal Z work visa to teach in China, you need to have a college degree.

Before applying for a teaching job in China, make sure that you have completed your degree or will be completing it soon. You will need to obtain a notarized/certified copy of your degree in order to complete the Z visa process and move to China. If you do not have a bachelor's degree then you will not be eligible for a legal work visa in China.

You must have a TEFL certificate

In addition to having at least a bachelor's degree, the Chinese government also requires that you have some ability to teach English. If you have a university teaching degree, then that is usually sufficient. However, many people who teach in China do not graduate with a teaching degree.

If you do not have a teaching degree, then you will also need to obtain a TEFL, Teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) degree. Foreign Language Certificate. If you don't have a TEFL certificate, don't be afraid because the process of getting one isn't difficult.

However, not all companies that deal with TEFL certificates are legitimate, especially since some online schools are not accepted in China. You need to make sure that the course is at least 120 hours long and includes actual teaching practice. Finally, if it's online TEFL, make sure the certificate doesn't say "online" on it, or it may not be accepted in China.

You must come from a country where English is the native language

Due to the rapid growth of English language learning in China, there is a steady demand for English language teachers in the ESL teaching industry. However, this demand has resulted in some schools hiring teachers with a limited command of the English language. As a result, in order to maintain the standard quality level of English teachers in China, the government has mandated that teachers be hired only from countries where English is the native language. Exceptions to this rule may sometimes be made depending on the quality of the candidate and their fluency in English, but these cases are rare.

These are the main requirements for teaching English in China. Some provinces/cities or schools will require at least 2 years of teaching experience, but this is not always the case. So it's still possible for a recent college graduate to get a teaching job in China right away.
