English Teacher Salary In China

With globalization, the world is getting smaller and smaller, and the value of English as a new universal language is growing. The Chinese Government attaches great importance to encouraging citizens to learn English as a means of strengthening their socio-economic strength. In China, in order to attract foreign teachers, foreign teachers are often offered generous salaries and often include a variety of benefits. Different schools and institutions in China offer different levels of compensation, with most offering free airfare, accommodation and paid holidays. So, if you are considering teaching English abroad, China is one of your best options.

What is the salary of English teachers in China

Teaching English in China may not offer you the same salary as you would in your home country, but due to the relatively low cost of living in China, your teaching salary may be much higher. Generally, the monthly salaries in both public and private institutions are between 10,000-15,000 RMB. However, some private institutions and international schools offer salaries as high as RMB 30,000 per month.

Public School

Public schools tend to have lower monthly salaries than private schools, between 6,000-15,000 RMB, so don't worry, there are plenty of benefits to supplement your salary. Teachers in public schools tend to work fewer hours than teachers in private schools, and they also enjoy longer paid leave. In general, public schools have more freedom in terms of teaching style and curriculum structure. A foreign English teacher in a public school works with a local co-teacher who helps you adjust to teaching in China. However, class sizes in public schools tend to be quite large, with an average of about 20 to 40 students.

Private Language School

Compared to public schools, private schools pay higher salaries, between 6,000-16,000 RMB per month. Salaries vary considerably due to the different requirements of the various language schools. Salary varies based on your personal teaching experience and your level and type of education. If you, like many people who teach English in China, have limited experience in teaching, it may be helpful to work in a private school as they tend to offer more support than public schools. Private schools also offer more help with applications and visas.

Private schools have a more rigorous curriculum than public schools and will have more direction in how you teach and manage your curriculum. Class sizes in private schools are much smaller than in public schools, but because they are geared towards adults, businessmen and children, they have a wider age range.

University

Compared to other schools, universities have a much lighter workload and less teaching time, with a maximum of 20 to 25 hours of class time per week, plus a few hours of prep time. University professors can enjoy more free time, paid airfare, accommodation and paid leave. Although this means lower wages, usually in the range of 7,000-9700 RMB/month.

International School

In China, ESL teachers have the highest salaries, usually between 12,000-29,000 RMB/month, so international schools usually require a teaching certificate from your home country to be eligible. Teachers in international schools generally work 40-hour days and have fewer benefits because their salaries are already high.
