学校始建于2001年4月，坐落于上海市浦东新区航空港与洋山深水港之间，是经上海市人民政府批准、国家教育部备案的非营利性全日制民办普通本科高等院校。2014年，学校被列入上海教育综合改革先行探索项目;2015年2月，被确定为教育综合改革建设“小规模、高水平”民办高校试点。2023年4月，学校顺利通过教育部本科教学工作合格评估。建校以来，学校坚持“德育为先、学生为本、能力为重”办学理念，推行博雅教育，紧扣国家战略需求，以“能力培养”为特色，致力于培养能更好适应时代发展需求，具有深厚家国情怀、广阔全球视野，具备批判性与创新性思维，能够独立思考、勇于探索，善于解决复杂问题的跨文化创新创业型人才，助力国家建设与发展。 Shanghai Xing Wei College is the first private, non-profit, liberal-arts college in modern, mainland China.
